Elfman, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, has always loved music, particularly movie soundtracks. As stated in his official biography, he traveled extensively as a child, and these experiences influenced his musical taste and love of music.

Elfman was a member of the well-known New Wave band Oingo Boingo. They are best known for their song "Weird Science," which was featured in the 1980s film of the same name. Elfman left the band in 1995 to concentrate on writing music for films.
Elfman is well-known for collaborating with a variety of directors, but his most well-known collaboration is with Burton. They've collaborated on over 20 projects together, including Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and Burton's Netflix series Wednesday. Their collaboration began with Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, when Burton and Paul Reubens commissioned Elfman to write the score after being impressed by his work on Oingo Boingo.

They married in a candlelight ceremony on November 29, 2003, in Los Angeles. Peter Fonda, Fonda's father, led her down the aisle, accompanied by a 20-person choir. According to PEOPLE, the couple first met on the set of the film "A Simple Plan" in 1998, where Fonda was the star and Elfman was the composer.
In 2005, Fonda and Elfman welcomed their son Oliver. Fonda stopped acting after Oliver's birth to focus on raising him and hasn't since. Elfman's previous marriage produced two children, Mali and Lola.

Elfman has received numerous honors, including a Grammy in 1990 for the Batman theme, two Emmy nominations for Desperate Housewives and Tim Burton's films, and four Academy Award nominations. Elfman and Fonda sold two Los Angeles homes in 2020, preferring to live in their Santa Barbara ranch as their primary residence during the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining a home in Los Angeles.

Elfman, 68, performed on stage for two weekends at a well-known music festival in Indio, California. He performed songs from his films, Oingo Boingo, and others.
